VSTEP Speaking Marking Criteria and How to Improve Each One
Quick answer: VSTEP Speaking is marked on these main criteria: grammar (range and accuracy), vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and how well you organise and develop ideas. You don't need a native accent — what matters is speaking clearly, continuously and on topic, with examples.
The criteria
| Criterion | What examiners listen for |
|---|---|
| Grammar | Simple and complex sentences, correct tenses, errors that don't block meaning. |
| Vocabulary | Enough words for the topic, precise word choice, paraphrasing when a word is missing. |
| Pronunciation | Clear final sounds, word stress and intonation; easy to understand. |
| Fluency | Speaking continuously with few hesitations at a natural pace. |
| Organisation | On-topic, structured answers developed with reasons and examples. |
Pronunciation: three common issues for Vietnamese speakers
- Dropped final sounds: works, liked, five. Read slowly and exaggerate the endings.
- Wrong word stress: deVELop, PHOtograph, phoTOgraphy. Check the dictionary and mark stress when you learn new words.
- Flat rhythm: English stresses content words. Shadow a 1-minute recording every day.
Improving fluency
- Talk for one minute non-stop on a random topic without stopping to correct yourself.
- Learn "holding" phrases: What I mean is…, Let me put it another way…
- When a word escapes you, paraphrase instead of going silent: the thing you use to…
Improving organisation
Use the short A–R–E answer for Part 1, a three-option comparison for Part 2 and introduction – three points – conclusion for Part 3. Details: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3.
Self-assessment while practising
Record your answer, listen back and compare it with a model answer on the same topic. Score yourself 0–10 on each criterion and note your most frequent error to drill separately.
The VSTEP Practice app lets you record Speaking answers with real exam timing, play them back and compare them with model answers. Recordings stay on your phone.
