A 30-Day VSTEP Self-Study Plan, Week by Week
Quick answer: With 60–90 minutes a day for 30 days you can master the test format and raise your VSTEP score noticeably. The plan: week 1, a diagnostic test and the format; week 2, Listening and Reading; week 3, Writing and Speaking; week 4, full timed mock tests and reviewing every mistake.
Before you start
- Set a target: B1 (4.0), B2 (6.0) or C1 (8.5) — see how VSTEP is scored.
- Keep a notebook for mistakes and new vocabulary.
- Fix a study slot every day.
Week 1 (days 1–7): Get familiar and diagnose
| Day | Task |
|---|---|
| 1 | One full timed mock test. Record your score in each skill. |
| 2 | Review every Listening and Reading mistake with explanations. |
| 3 | Read the exam format. Learn a Task 1 letter template. |
| 4 | Listening Part 1 + dictation on three recordings. |
| 5 | Reading passages 1–2, timed. Write one letter. |
| 6 | Speaking Part 1: record answers to eight questions. |
| 7 | Review the week's vocabulary and mistakes. |
Week 2 (days 8–14): Listening and Reading
- Every day: one Listening part (rotate Parts 1, 2, 3) + one Reading passage.
- After each: read the transcript or explanation and note why you went wrong (missed a word? misread the question? ran out of time?).
- Day 14: full timed Listening + Reading, compared with day 1.
Week 3 (days 15–21): Writing and Speaking
- Odd days: one Task 2 essay (40 minutes) + self-assess against the criteria and a model answer.
- Even days: one Task 1 letter (20 minutes) + Speaking Part 2 or 3, recorded and played back.
- Keep 15 minutes of Listening a day so you don't lose your ear.
Week 4 (days 22–30): Mock tests and polish
- Days 22, 25, 28: full timed mock tests.
- Days in between: review that test's mistakes and drill your weakest part.
- Day 29: light review of vocabulary and Writing/Speaking phrases.
- Day 30: rest and get your documents ready — see test-day tips.
Staying on track
- Review mistakes on a spaced-repetition schedule (after 1, 3 and 7 days) so they stick.
- Watch your score chart — visible progress is the best motivation.
- On busy days, do at least one short part rather than skipping entirely.
