VSTEP Test-Day Tips: What to Prepare and What to Do on the Day
Quick answer: On VSTEP test day, bring the identity documents your test centre requires, arrive at least 30 minutes early, stick to a time plan for each skill, never leave a multiple-choice question blank, and keep talking in Speaking even if you make small mistakes.
The week before
- Take 1–2 full mock tests at the same time of day as the real test so your body gets used to the pace.
- Don't cram new vocabulary; review your mistakes notebook and Writing/Speaking phrases.
- Double-check the venue, time, test format (paper or computer) and the documents you must bring.
The night before
- Lay out your ID, admission slip and any allowed items.
- Get 7–8 hours of sleep. Late-night cramming tends to hurt your Listening score.
In the exam: Listening
- Use every second of question-reading time.
- If you miss one, pick an answer and move on immediately — don't lose the next few questions too.
- Never leave a blank: wrong answers aren't penalised.
In the exam: Reading
- Wear a watch or follow the on-screen clock; split about 12–12–17–17 minutes across the four passages.
- Stuck for over 2 minutes? Choose an answer, flag it and come back.
In the exam: Writing
- Consider doing Task 2 first if you tend to run out of time — it carries more weight.
- Spend 5 minutes planning and the last 5 minutes proofreading.
- Estimate your word count: average words per line × number of lines.
In the exam: Speaking
- Smile, greet the examiner and speak clearly from your very first sentence.
- If you make a mistake, correct it quickly and carry on — don't stop to apologise.
- Didn't catch the question? Ask politely: Sorry, could you repeat the question, please?
- Use the full minute of preparation in Parts 2 and 3 to note keywords.
After the test
Results usually come out within a few weeks, depending on the centre. If you didn't reach your target level, look at your score in each skill to see what to improve before your next attempt.
