VSTEP Speaking Part 1 (Social Interaction): Natural, Complete Answers
Quick answer: VSTEP Speaking Part 1 lasts about 3 minutes; the examiner asks about two familiar topics (hometown, hobbies, work, study…). Answer each question in 2–3 sentences: a direct answer, a reason, then an example or detail. Don't give one-word answers, but don't talk too long either — the examiner needs time to ask every question.
How Part 1 works
The examiner (or the computer) introduces two topics with 3–4 short questions each. It tests basic social conversation and helps you warm up. It is the easiest part in which to show fluency.
Common topics
- Hometown, where you live, neighbours
- Study, work, colleagues
- Hobbies, sport, music, films
- Shopping, food, cooking
- Travel, transport, weather
- Technology, phones, social media
The A–R–E formula
- Answer: respond directly.
- Reason: explain why.
- Example / Extra: add an example, a detail or a comparison.
Q: Do you prefer to cook at home or eat out?
I generally prefer cooking at home. It's much healthier because I can control how much oil and salt I use. For example, on weekends I usually make a big pot of soup that lasts for a few days. That said, I do enjoy eating out with friends on special occasions.
Phrases that keep you fluent
- Starting: Well, actually… / To be honest… / I'd say that…
- Buying time: That's an interesting question. Let me think…
- Adding: On top of that… / Another reason is…
- Past vs present: When I was younger, I used to… but these days…
Common mistakes
- Saying "Yes" or "No" and then stopping.
- Reciting long memorised answers — it sounds unnatural and often misses the question.
- Using the wrong tense for past (Did you…?) or future (Will you…?) questions.
Record your answers and listen back. You'll immediately hear your hesitations, tense errors and repeated words.
