How VSTEP Is Scored: Converting Scores to B1, B2 and C1

Updated:

Quick answer: Each VSTEP skill is scored from 0 to 10. The overall score is the average of the four skills, rounded to the nearest 0.5. An overall 4.0–5.5 is Level 3 (B1), 6.0–8.0 is Level 4 (B2) and 8.5–10 is Level 5 (C1); below 4.0 no certificate is awarded.

Scoring each skill

Overall score and levels

Overall score = (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking) ÷ 4, rounded to the nearest 0.5.

6.0 – 8.0Level 4B2
8.5 – 10Level 5C1

A worked example

You score Listening 5.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 5.0 and Speaking 6.0. The average is 23 ÷ 4 = 5.75, which rounds to 6.0 → Level 4 (B2).

If Speaking had been 5.0 instead, the average would be 22 ÷ 4 = 5.5 → Level 3 (B1). One point in a single skill can cost you a whole level, so don't neglect any of them.

Setting a smart target

Tip: since wrong answers cost nothing, always choose an answer for every Listening and Reading question, even if you have to guess.

Track your scores while you study

Write down your score in each skill after every mock test. Once you can see which skill drags your average down, you'll know where to spend your time. The VSTEP Practice app converts Listening and Reading results to the VSTEP scale automatically and charts your progress by part.
