VSTEP B1 Preparation for University Graduation: A Student Guide

Updated:

Quick answer: To reach VSTEP B1 (Level 3) you need an overall average of 4.0 or more across the four skills. The quickest route is to secure the easier points — Listening Part 1, Reading passages 1–2, a correctly formatted letter and complete answers in Speaking Part 1 — rather than trying to master every hard question.

What score do you need for B1?

You need an overall score of 4.0 (the average of four skills, rounded to 0.5). For example, Listening 4.0, Reading 4.5, Writing 3.5 and Speaking 4.0 average 4.0 → B1. That is roughly 40% of the multiple-choice questions correct, plus simple but clear writing and speaking.

Which parts secure B1?

Mistakes that make students miss B1

  1. Leaving multiple-choice questions blank — guessing is never penalised.
  2. Writing too few words or not finishing Task 2. A complete 200-word essay scores far better than nothing.
  3. Long silences when speaking. Use fillers such as "That's an interesting question. Let me think…".
  4. Never practising under time pressure, then running out of time in Reading.

A 4-week plan for B1

WeekWhat to do
1Take one full mock test to find your baseline. Learn a Task 1 letter template; review present, past and future tenses.
2One Listening part and one Reading passage every day. Review every mistake. Write two letters.
3Practise the 250-word essay with a 4-paragraph plan. Rehearse Speaking Parts 1–2 and record yourself.
4Two full timed mock tests. Review errors and drill your weakest part.

With more time, follow the day-by-day 30-day VSTEP study plan.

Check your university's rules: some only accept certificates from particular test centres or require a certificate issued within a certain period.
